This professional development opportunity will guide teachers as they learn how to differentiate guided reading lessons to match their students’ stages of reading development and the Common Core State Standards. The focus will be on meeting the needs of individual readers by surrounding them with books, carefully matching readers with texts, and providing ample time for comprehension conversations about complex texts. In addition, ideas for launching and managing independent literacy activities will be shared.


Powerful Reading Instruction for the Differentiated Classroom

This presentation will provide teachers with research-based, classroom-tested strategies for teaching readers utilizing the gradual release of responsibility model. The focus will be on meeting the needs of individual readers by surrounding young readers with books, carefully matching students with texts, and providing ample time for independent practice. In addition, teachers will learn how to engage their students in robust vocabulary lessons, meaningful fluency development activities, thoughtful comprehension lessons, and multi-level, flexible small group instruction. Teachers will leave this session understanding how to differentiate reading instruction for ALL learners.


The Promise of Poetry for Struggling Readers

Audience: K-3
Session length: Can vary from 2-3 hours

Learn how the components of powerful core reading instruction coupled with poetry can help your young readers soar. In this session, Maria will share the research-based components of effective core reading instruction that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards along with sensible strategies to meet the needs of struggling and reluctant readers. Teachers will learn how to use a collection of engaging poems to strengthen readers’ phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
